Internet experts reengineer Paris hotel’s Wi-Fi during conference

This week, an enormous group of internet technology experts met in Paris for the 83rd meeting of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). And while they thought the week would be filled with conferences, workshops and forums, they ended up taking on a job they all couldn't resist.

With so many of the attendees using large amounts of bandwidth at the Hotel Concorde Lafayette, the building's Wi-Fi connection was overloaded and moved at excruciatingly slow speeds, according to Network World. Emails began to circulate through the group about the faulty Wi-Fi, though many didn't even receive the messages because they couldn't access the internet.

"There are significant issues with this infrastructure, and it varies depending on where you are in the hotel and the load at the time," Karen O'Donoghue from the Internet Society sent out in a message, the source reports. "I have seen similar performance numbers. For me it varied between 5 percent and 35 percent packet loss with latencies up to 5 or 6 seconds. That's obviously pretty painful."

With that, a team of IETF attendees spoke with hotel management, and agreed to completely re-engineer its wireless network.

While the Concorde Lafayette was lucky enough to have a collection of tech gurus fix their Wi-Fi voluntarily, most businesses aren't graced with that luxury. Any company that believes their telecommunications or internet platforms aren't as good as they should be would be wise to have a needs assessment conducted by leading business technology consulting firm Subsidium Technologies.

With their guidance, businesses can learn about new technologies that may be able to streamline their productivity and save money. Subsidium's experts can help with procurement and project management, as well as billing review and contract compliance analysis.
