Trucking company finds remote communication solution

Modern telematic and communication technologies are not only making businesses more efficient, they're also opening up employment opportunities for some people who otherwise wouldn't have been able to hold a job.

For 20 years, interstate trucking company Boyd Bros. Transportation used the same phone system that couldn't support staffers that wanted to work remotely from their homes. As a result, the company lost a lot of valuable employees and as well as a significant amount of money.

Realizing that this was a problem the business needed to fix as soon as possible, it invested in a new unified communication platform to improve accessibility for home workers. The system allows employees at the Boyd Bros. headquarters to transfer calls from a hosted contact center to the telephones of remote workers' homes, Elaine Maund, vice president of information systems from the telecommunications provider Avaya Aura, explained to NetworkWorld.com.

She added that the platform saves Boyd Bros. $40,000 to $60,000 per year in new recruit training, and an additional $70,000 annually because it allows for the trucking company to purchase a more affordable wide area network (WAN) connection thanks to the video capabilities of the telecom system.

Many businesses are experiencing similar problems as their most experienced employees get older and may no longer be capable of getting into the office everyday.
